Week 6: Let's get everyone moving!

             Can you believe that it is already May and that there are only two weeks left in FitEx 2018? How crazy is that? Take a few minutes to reflect on your FitEx journey so far. Think about all of the things that you’ve accomplished over the last six weeks, and what you want to accomplish before the end of the program. Start brainstorming some goals that you want to meet after FitEx is over. Or, maybe start thinking about planning a party with your teammates celebrating everything you’ve done over the last 8 weeks of FitEx!

               So far, we have talked about different ideas on how to improve your own physical fitness, as well as how to handle some of the barriers you may face when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. Things such as bad weather or feeling like there’s not enough time to workout or be physically active can be hard challenges to overcome. Last week we talked about how important it is to stay physically active throughout our life. One topic we haven’t talked about yet, is how to get the whole family physically active.

               Spring is finally here bringing along the much-awaited sunshine and pleasant temperatures. One of the best ways to get your whole family active is to head outside. Like we mentioned last week, going on a hike is a great way to get the entire family involved. We are blessed that Virginia and Wyoming are two beautiful states that have fantastic places to take a hike with trails that accommodate all activity levels. Try talking to your friends and colleagues about good hikes in your area, or simply head over to Google and do some exploring of your own. There are also a plethora of apps that you can download to your phone, including AllTrails which can give you a map of all of the hikes near you based off of your location. They also have a website that you can check out too; https://www.alltrails.com/?ref=header.

               If you don’t want to go on a hiking adventure, there are plenty of other things that you can do. You can simply go for a walk as a family, or maybe you do something a little harder and go on family bike ride or a family run. Heading out into your yard or a local park for a family game of baseball or basketball is always a good option too.  You can even get together with your teammates and their families to do any of these activities.

               If it isn’t nice out, there are plenty of things to do as a group indoors.  Give a workout video from YouTube or a new group exercise class like Zumba or yoga a whirl. Maybe, you create a little family competition and see who can do the most push-ups or who can accumulate the most physical activity minutes in a week.  Being physical active together, isn’t the only way you can get your whole family involved in living a healthy lifestyle. Try getting everyone involved in cooking a healthy dinner, like the vegetable crescent role pizza that we highlighted last week.  There are so many ways to get everyone in your family involved in cultivating a healthy lifestyle, we hope we gave you a few highlights on where to start in this week’s newsletter. 

               With only two weeks left in FitEx 2018, it is time to start thinking about how you are going to maintain the healthy lifestyle you’ve created over the course of the program. Sometimes it can be hard to stay healthy during the summer between backyard cookouts, summer vacations, the fourth of July, and everything else that comes with longer days and warmer weather. However, if you continue to practice the healthy habits and regular physical activity schedule that you developed over the course of FitEx you should be well equipped to tackle any challenge!
